A performance summary of the comparator circuit is shown in Table I. The high gain at 400 MHz and the propagation delay of only 1.5 ns are unprecedented in this class of device. The design and description of the comparator in partially analog terms emphasises that this is basically an analog design technique. The comparators as designed will find applications in fiber optic links, nucleonics, and in data conversion. The basic input cell will be further exploited in comparator arrays for parallel analog-to-digital conversion.
