In December of 1996 the Internet had 627,000 registered domains. That number has doubled to 1.5 million by the end of 1997. The total Internet information flow doubles every 100 days; the publicity and start of China's ecommerce market lags behind those of foreign countries by 1 to 2 years. Currently, the total number of China's Internet users has reached 1.1175 million with over 480,000 domestic companies owning domain names. According to China Internet Network Information Center's latest survey, 71.8% of Internet users desire the ability to shop online. Although China has already made many beneficial advancements in ecommerce, these advancements can only be considered experiments in the early stages of ecommerce and not ecommerce activities in the true sense. Currently China's ecommerce focus is more on academic research, with the area of practical applications still a vacuum to be filled. China not only has to solve global ecommerce problems shared by all, China also urgently needs to solve a series of problems specific to the locale.
