Although Chinese subject varies in person and number like English subject, its predicate verb is always in original form and has no inflectional changes. If the subject is singular or a mass noun, the verb should take the singular form by adding the suffix“-s”; on the other hand, if the subject is plural, the verb should take the base form.
e.g.员工要求高工资。
Employees require high salary.
An employee requires high salary.
Such a difference may lead to the negative influence of Chinese on the learners’ command of syntactic agreement in English. Look at the following examples:
①People*finds a job very hard. (find)
②Every graduate student*want to hunt a job. (wants)
③The main reason*are too many college students. (is)
In sentence1 people is a plural form though it has no suffix“-s”, so its predicate verb should take the plural form find. In sentence 2“every student” is singular in form and notion so the link verb should be in the singular form wants. The usage of the unmarked single person verb of sentence 3 is same as that of sentence 2.The above analysis shows that English requires strict observation in subject-verb concord, while the subject of Chinese sentence may have the singular and plural senses without any changes in the form of the predict verb. 展开
