I got up from my desk and snatched the nearest newspaper I could find. I needed to know more. As best I could tell, the young black student could not have raped anybody; he has several witnesses who establish him off campus throughout the evening of the alleged assault. As far as I can tell, the young white woman had been raped and she was certain, if mistaken, about the face and the voice of her assailant.
I declined to make any public comment: I do not yet know what the truth of this terrible matter may be. I believe there is a likelihood of mistaken identification on the part of the victim. And I believe that such mistake, if that is the case, will have created a second victim, the wrongly accused black student. But these are my opinions merely. And I cannot comprehend why or how anyone would expect me to choose between my gender and racial identities.
I do not agree that rape is less serious than any other heinous felony. I do not agree that the skin color of a female victim shall alienate me from a gender sense of unity and peril. I do not agree that the mistaken accusation of a black man is less than a very serious crime. I do not agree that the genuine gender concerns that I embody shall alienate me from a racial sense of unity and peril.
