The essential factors of the Qipao's design
It is undetstood that the aesthetics of fashion design should be a kind of comprehensive art equipped with not only aesthetic value, but is also, feadibility, economic value as well as creativity. The Qipao is not only a comprehensive artistic creation combining national culture together with feasibility and functional nature, but is also an imcluding the above-men-tioned aesthetic factors which have even more profoundly embodied a perfect combination of form and content.
1. Model forms. Whether in ancient or present times, in our own or foreign countries, garments can be divided into four categories according to silhouettes: first, △,second,▽,third, and fourth . The Qipao has been involved in three of these categories, which are the first, the third and the fourth. At the beginning stage Qipao mainly focused its shape on triangrlar silhouette, slightly tending to have a narrow upper part and wide lower part; and in the middle stage on the rectangrlar silhouette, with upper part and lower part connected as a tube-shaped body ;while in the latter stage it changed to a curved silhorette.From these three stages of development of the Qipao's silhouette, one can catch a glimpse of its development:
(1) Gradual development towards simplicity and practicality;
(2) Gradual development towards interationlization;
(3) Gradual development towards becoming more scientific.
It is a qualitative leap that the Chinese-style Qipao's shape has altered from a spatial spreading style to one of extreme contraction, which is a transformation from traditional conservation to modern opening. This comes from an ideology of reform, a breakthrorghin creative thinking, which could be said to be a fashion reform after the 1911 Revolution.
