Frustrated by lengthening airline delays and pressed for time, business travelers are following the lead of showbiz superstars and taking to the skies in chartered executive aircraft and helicopters. Once seen as the ultimate in ostentation, the private jet is becoming a commercial necessity.
Comparatively commonplace in the US, the executive charter business - and increasingly part-ownership of aircraft - is now growing in Europe as travelers decide it can be more cost-effective than reliance on scheduled airlines. It's all a question of assessing what the true cost is, not the fare. If you look at it as a pure transportation cost, the executive charter is almost always going to look more expensive unless you are traveling around in groups of ten or eight.
But all too often travel time is down time, whether it's in the air, on the road or on rail and these days a lot of people simply cannot afford that. The imperative is becoming greater. The latest statistics show that European air traffic control delays this year will be the equivalent of 11,000 working weeks. The cost to airlines and passengers is estimated at €8 billion. Prospects for growth in private travel are dazzlingly bright with the market set to double each year.
What does it cost? The company Air Partner cites the case of a traveler flying from London to Berlin and then on to Lyon before returning home. Using scheduled services the trip takes two full days; using chartered aircraft it takes just one. It may cost €8,000 more but we've saved a day of his time, let alone the other three or four people traveling with him. While low-cost carriers can undercut that, they cannot deviate from their rigid timetables. If the meeting runs late, scheduled planes won't wait. Equally, executive jets can operate to and from smaller less-congested and cheaper airports, closer to the traveler's home or office, saving more time.
And there's the question of commercial confidentiality. Renting your own plane gives the option to travel with people you choose, conduct meetings, discuss business strategies or simply relax. You may prefer it if your rivals in business do not know where you are going or who you are meeting and once again private travel provides that possibility. It could also be argued that it can add to the prestige of your company but this is a misconception as it is often seen as a misuse of funds. One also has to consider other aspects, for example, ensuring that the private company has a good safety record. As with most things it all depends on the quality of the company and the service it offers.
66. Previously, the use of private aircraft was seen as _____.
the domain of big business only
an unnecessary display of wealth
a suitable means of getting round huge countries
a sign that a superstar had to boost his image 展开
