请教下英语高手几个新概念的问题

第四册19课有句话：.....as if sleeping is not simply a matter of giving the body a rest. "simly"不是副词么？ 怎么能用在这里呢？这里修饰什么词？ 是matter么？还是be动词？
23课有句话： ...and these will ply the short wings with such irresistible power that they can bore for long distances. 这里的"bore”是什么意思？我看了一些参考书，上面写是：bear 在此处的意思是 “进行” 可是文中写的是bore，bore的确是bear 的过去式，但是这里bore前有个情态动词can,不能用过去式吧？ 难道是课文错了？ 如何解释呢？谢谢

1. simply 是用来修饰 is 的，is not simply 表示“不仅仅是”，你可以把它当成一种固定用法，类似的还有 I am simply sleepy.我就是困了，用simply用来强调“困”这种状态
2. bore在这里似乎应该是bear的过去式，但表示的是“承受，负担”。至于为什么用bore而不用bear，我也说不上来，不好意思了
