My grandmother used to say to me, "You can count the number of your true friends on the fingers of one hand." But now I think she was only half right. Maybe we do only make a few "best" friends in our lifetime, but those aren't the only people we can call friends. There're many different types. Let me tell you some of them.
One type is the "soccer mom friend". Alice is a good example. We both have kids who play soccer, and someone has to take them to their practices and pick them up. We just sometimes meet, have coffee and chat, but those are the only times we see each other.
Another type is "hobby friend". Roy and Charles are a good example. We go out and identify different kinds of birds. We just share an interest in birds.
Then there's the "other half of the couple" type of friend. George is a good example. I have to be George's friend because of his wife, Carmen, a friend I've known since college. George and I don't share that many interests, but we have a friendly relationship.
Finally, there's the category my grandmother was talking about-the true or best friend. I only have two, my husband and Carmen. What's a "true" or "best" friend For me it's the person you can talk to for hours. It's also the person who doesn't try to spare your feelings but tells you the good and the not-so-good things about yourself.
It would be hard to live without one or two best friends around. But it's good to have the other kinds, too.
