(38)This report gives the results of geomechanics laboratory testing of cores collected during drilling to established the coal resources in the Mokau area,North Taranaki。The testing was carried out as part of geotechnical evaluation being carried out by NZGS for Mines Division (Brown in prep) to assist preliminary mining assessment。The testing was undertaken between March and June 1984 to evaluate some of the physical characteristics of the rocks above and below the coal seams，in particular their strength in slaking properties。This report also includes the results of strength testing of the coal seams in a servo-controlled，stiff loading frame。The results of strength of earlier testing was reported by Miller and Wintour (1982) and Wintour and Read(1983).
（39）The NZCRS has identified two possible sources of coal to fuel the proposed station—the Maramarua and /or Mokau coalfields。Investigations are therefore being undertaken related to both coalfields, the final choice depending on factors such as environmental and economic considerations and the availability of supply sources。The present report records the results of a preliminary stage of the investigation programme relating to the Mokau Coalfield in North Taranaki。This stage involves the assessment of existing physical and social environmental data and the making of recommendations for further work required to provide essential information for use in pre-feasibility mining studies and environmental impact assessment procedures。
