Locke Promises Closer Ties

Gary Locke, the new U.S. Ambassador to China, has promised to promote bilateral cooperation and understanding between the two countries.

“The United States and China have a profoundly important and complex diplomatic and economic bilateral relationship—one with challenges, no question, but one which also holds great promises for expanded cooperation and collaboration,” Locke said at a press conference held on August 14, his first public appearance since arriving in Beijing. Locke’s wife Mona Lee and their three children accompanied him at the conference.

Locke was appointed by U.S. President Barack Obama in March after the previous ambassador Jon Huntsman resigned. The U.S. Senate confirmed the appointment on July 27.

The 61-year-old Locke is the first Chinese-American to hold this post. In 1997, he became the first governor of a state in the Continental United States* of Asian descent. After serving two terms as the governor of Washington, he joined Obama’s cabinet as the first Chinese-American Commerce Secretary (商务部长) .

“I think being a Chinese-American, I have a greater sensitivity and understanding of the history and culture of China,” Locke said. “But I am here as a representative of the American government, and the American government wants closer, more collaborative and cooperative relations with the people and government of China.”

Locke will be the U.S.’s top diplomat to China at a delicate period of China-U.S. relations. The two countries only recently resumed military relations after China cut off such ties in response to the U.S.’s newest weapons deal with Taiwan.

During a post-conference meet-and-greet (见面会), Locke responded to concerns of U.S. debt troubles by saying that Beijing’s investments in the U.S. are safe despite the recent problems. “Over the last several days more people are buying U.S. Treasuries (国债) and that’s a clear indication that investment in the U.S. is safe and secure and that the economy, while having its challenges, is still strong,” he said.
