1、the other 独立使用时表示两者当中的另一个（= the other one，此时other是代词）
例如：I have two apples，one is big and the other is small.
2、the other +复数名词 = the others
例如：There are forty-five students in our class.Twenty of them are boys ，the others（=other students）are girls.
other（s），可以指人也可指物，前面有定冠词时表示特指一定范围内的“其他人或物”。
