答案说“toward”错了，是不是应该改为“to”呢？（question 后面的介词用to?) 怎么理解句中的“even when”呢？为什么不把“even”去掉呢？

2.Only by the afterglow of the sunset could the hikers find their path to the campsite at so late an hour.

可以把“could”改为“did”吗？“so late an hour”怎么理解呢？？？

1. put a question to sb：向某人提问
(这是固定短语，不能写成 put a question towards sb，就像 look on (旁观)，不能写成 look onwards，look forward to (盼望) 不能写成 look for to 一样。)

2. even when 不等于 when，前强后弱。

3. “可以把“could”改为“did”吗？"
britishpretty说： 可以改，没有语法问题，但改变了意思。
--------同意。正如：“我说英语” 与 “我能说英语”不一样，用 "could" 或 "did" 意思有所变化。

4. "so late an hour" 是一种结构式
--------so，as，quite，rather等少数几个词与可数名词的单数连用时，词序有点特殊，但很常见：___ + a. + a/an + n.

a. so hot a day
b. This is as beautiful a lake as the one in my town. (语法对，但不要这样说英语。)
c. rather fierce a dog = a rather fierce dog
d. quite small a towm = quite a small town

Even + when- 只是强调，突出“意外，没有料到的情形”，结合上文才好理解。去掉了就稍改变了作者的语气。
不 toward(s) 与to 之间的差异，两者没有什么区别。
应当说, put questions about....
2。可以改，没有语法问题，但改变了意思。could 表示可能性，未必去做，did 表示特定的人在特定的时间里做了。
