一道英文改错题,求大神指教

背景是研究第二语言学习的，第一个问题：其中一句是 the perspective adopted to view the acquiring of an additional language is that of an individual attempts to do so. 答案是attempts 应该改成attempting. 但是我本来以为是单复数的问题，改成了attempt。这样不对吗？？为什么要改成动名词啊？？
第二个问题：还有一句That is ,the spoylight is on what mental capabilities are involved, what psychological factors play a role in the learning or acquisition……第二个what 不应该改成how吗，what不应该是指代宾语什么的时候才用的吗？？

The perspective adopted to view the acquiring of an additional language is that (of) an individual attempts to do so.

注意括号里的of，介词后应使用名词/动名词短语。如果要用attempt也应该是individual's attempt
第二个问题：
That is, the spotlight is on what mental capabilities are involving, what psychological factors play a role in the learning or acquisition, and whether ...
what psychological factors play a role in the learning or acquisition这里的what修饰的是psychological factors的种类，而不是play a role的方式。

请问是任何两个名词连接时中间都要有所有格或者of的形式吗？

两个名词连接连接可以有很多形式啊，用and等连词也可以啊。你说的应该是两个名词有从属关系吧，一般有生命的名词加's构成所有格，而无生命多用of，当然for，to也可以，比如a present for Tom等等

我就是搞不清楚，有的名词是可以直接连在一起，比如brain drain 人才流失，词性都应该是名词吧，就没用所有格，但是再比如学生处 students' affairs division 这就要用所有格。。。真的很混乱啊！！

有些词组是不用加所有格和介词的，比如sand storm而不是sand's storm等等，通常的经验是人和物不可以直接连在一起——比如student's affairs就是人和物，需要分开；brain drain二者都是物，可以直接连在一起，当然这只是经验之谈，很多固定搭配可能也不符合这样的规则，自己慢慢积累吧。
