The requirement of personality and individuality of garments is increasing. Made-to-measure( MTM ) has been a major trend in the development of the world garment industry[1] . Figure 1 gives a framework for MTM which uses the digital and network technologies, digital measurement of the human body, digital analysis of the human body, the human body and clothing, automapping, clothing CAD design, web links, and other customized apparel through networking methods. As for garment design, the key is the matching of garment with human bodies[2-4] . How to obtain the body model and apply it in garment design and production are very important for MTM system. Fig. 1 An M TM system framework The body classification models and the integration methods with M TM are novel research directions[2-6] . Body type has been recognized as the important factor in creating custom-fit silhouette. So some researchers used directly automated M TM computer aided design programs based on body type information, such as AccuM ark M TM of Gerber Scientific and Lectra Systems. Another path is to develop an adaptive M TM system based on new body classifications. Now the major method of body shape analysis is mainly based on cluster
analysis. In a previous research, WANG et al. extracted different indexes of body type cluster by main component analysis[7] . Liu et al. presented a body shape analysis approach based on fuzzy particle swarm optimization clustering algorithm[8] . Song and Ashdown developed a reliable and objective categorization method for the lower body shapes of women using principal component analysis and cluster analysis[9] . As shown above, each of the current methods of categorizing body shape is limited in circumference measurement, lengths, heights, and front or side silhouettes.Adapting for the body, learning, evolutionary, and intelligent capabilities are neglected, whereas they are the key features to coordinate the design processes among customers, designers,and technicians.The aim of this study was to make the following contributions to the researches of M TM by adopting intelligent methods. The body classification framework is based on the cluster analysis that k. nearest-neighbor ( KNN ) and multi-class support vector machine ( M SVM ) [10] is proposed. And five body angles are developed to define the body shape. The solution of adaptive M TM is studied and the performance is discussed by case demonstration.
