真诚的跪求各位英语高手帮我解答一下这两句英语

各位朋友我现在正在背诵新概念英语第三册,48课现在遇见那么两句不懂的句子需要大家帮我解答下!The place consisted of a straggling unmade road which was lined on either side by small houses.这句话书上翻译为,这儿有一条未经修筑的弯弯曲曲的道路，路两边排列着一些矮小的农舍!road which was lined on either side by small houses其实作者想说明的就是许多小房子排列在,路的两边!可是从直译来讲,似乎给人的意思就是说....路被许多小房子排列在两边,根本没有体会出是小房子被排列在路边的意思!!the only sign of life being an ugly-looking black goat on a short length of rope tied to a tree in a field nearby这句话书中解释为,村里似乎无人居住，唯一的生命迹象是附近田里一只面目可憎的黑山羊，用一截短绳拴在一棵树上......这里的being到底是be动词的形式,还是和life是一种词组搭配呢??如果是be动词的用法为什么用ing形式??on到底是指用的意思还是说和物体接触,如果是用的意思用with更好我觉得

个人遇见：
1. road which was lined on either side by small houses确实不是很好理解，但是如果那它变为主动语态可能会易容理解很多：the small houses lined on the road either side, 而作者用被动语态主要是想强调road，及更好连接上文。
2.the only sign of life being an ugly-looking black goat on a short length of rope tied to a tree in a field nearby。1）这里的being是be动词的ing形式，这里是由名词和分词组成的独立主格结构，作状语：（名词the only sign of life+分词being）；2）on的意思理解：主格结构的主语是the only sign（迹象） ，那“迹象”当然是用“on”与“a short length of rope”连接会好一点，另外作者想强调的是一种静态的景象（迹象），这样用on表达可能更好表达这种静态的东西，而不是with(用)。
