Mabel is in Grade Two this summer. She likes reading. She always finishes her homework at school. So she can do some reading after supper when her parents and brother watch TV.
One day the girl borrowed a book from her friend. It was very interesting. She began to read it after they had supper. Her brother, John liked music. He listened to the radio in the next room. It was noisy（嘈杂的）and she couldn’t read at all. She told him to turn it off, but he didn’t listen to her. She had to plug her ears with some cotton（用棉花塞住）.
Before John went to bed, he remembered his homework. He brought out his students’ book, but he couldn’t do it. He had to go to ask for his sister’s help.
“Could you explain（讲解）Exercise 5 to me, please?”he asked.
No answer.
“I find you don’t plug your ears tightly（紧地）. I’m sure you can hear me.”
“You’re wrong!”said Mabel. “I don’t hear you at all! I plugged my ears tightly and I can hear nothing.”

“ Mable这个夏天上二年级。她喜欢看书。她经常在学校把作业做完，这样在晚饭后、在她父母和弟弟看电视的时候她就可以看书。
一天，这个小女孩从朋友那儿借了一本书。这本书非常有意思。晚饭后她开始阅读这本书。他得弟弟，John喜欢听歌，他在隔壁房间听音乐。音乐声很吵，以至于Mable无法专心读书。她让弟弟把音乐关掉，但她的弟弟不听她的。她不得不在耳朵里塞上棉花
在John睡觉前，他想起了家庭作业。他拿出作业本但不会做这些题目。他不得不去寻求姐姐的帮助。
‘你能帮我讲解一下联系我么？’他问。
没有回答。
‘我发现你没有把耳朵塞紧。我确定你能听见我说话’。
‘错！’Mabel说，‘我根本听不见你说话！我把耳朵塞得很紧，什么都听不见！’”

根据文章意思，Mabel肯定听见了John说话，只是因为John打扰她看书而生气，所以不愿帮助他所以故意装作没听见。
