Season1
Episode 1
The episode (and series) begins in 2030 with an older Ted Mosby telling his children the story of how he met their mother. The story begins in 2005, with Ted's best friend and roommate Marshall Eriksen proposing to his girlfriend Lily Aldrin, prompting Ted to begin a search to find his own soulmate. At a pub called MacLarens, alongside his friend Barney Stinson, Ted meets budding news anchor Robin Scherbatsky, with whom he is instantly smitten. Ted asks her out on a date, and the date is successful. The date concludes with Robin being called away for a news story.

Ted's friends tell him that he was supposed to kiss Robin before she left. Ted goes to Robin's house (“Suited up”, much to Barney's delight), with the company of Marshall, Lily and Barney. He stops at the restaurant of their first date and symbolically steals the blue French horn (factually a mellophone, not a French horn) on the wall and continues on to Robin's apartment with the gang. Things are going great and they are about to kiss when Ted inexplicably tells Robin that he loves her, prematurely destroying his chances with her. After a lingering goodbye, and with the afterthought that he may or may not have missed “the signal” (missing out for the second time on his first kiss with her), Future Ted tells his children that is how he met their... Aunt Robin.
Episode 2
After telling Robin that he loved her, Ted decides to not contact her so his friends will think he is over her. However, he soon falls for her again, and finds out from Marshall that Lily has officially met Robin, having recognized her from the news, and that Robin told Lily that she was still interested in him, but she thinks that he's not casual. Ted decides to try to be "casual" in his relationship between Robin.

He runs to meet her at a location where she is reporting (where coincidentally a kid is stuck inside a crane machine trying to get a purple giraffe) and informs her that he is throwing a party. He holds it repeatedly over the course of three nights when she says that she is unable to come and she only manages to come when he holds the party for a third successive night.

Robin inadvertently finds out (when Marshall bursts out that Ted should stop waiting for her) that the parties were held for her. Ted covers it up by saying that he wanted her to meet another guy called Carlos. But after a while, as Robin goes up onto the roof, Ted decides that he has to confront and confess his love to her and thus try to win her affections.

On the roof, they decide that they both want different things; Ted reluctantly agrees to just be friends, and they go for a drink. Robin then tells Ted that she will help him find "the one".

Lily, meanwhile, is happy to be engaged and extremely pleased with her engagement ring, resulting in an increased sexual desire that keeps Marshall very busy, especially as he has to submit a 25 page paper for a class in his law school. Marshall appears to get angry when someone at the party uses one of his law books as a coaster, but drinking two beers at the bar with everyone else increases his confidence and he ends up doing fairly well on the paper (getting a B-), especially considering that he wrote the entire thing the night before the deadline.

Barney, meanwhile, faces relationship troubles of his own. He picks a girl at the party who does not know anyone else (which is the norm in parties in the city), and suggests Ted have a one night stand with her. Ted declines and Barney decides to go after her himself. To Barney's annoyance this woman returns to the parties on the subsequent nights and wants to have a relationship. He decides the best way to lose her is to tell her "I think I'm in love with you" like Ted did with Robin.[1] Nevertheless, she appears at the third party on Sunday night as well and he eventually finds that she is with the guy who Ted tried to set Robin up with.

Episode 3
Barney has decided that it is time for Ted to get out of his routine of going to the same bar. He tells Ted that he wants to do something "legendary." Barney pulls Ted into his cab, and tells him that he needs to pick someone up at the airport. Ted did not realize that Barney meant that he was going to JFK to pick up women. Barney tells Ted that they are posing as international businessman who have just returned from a lucrative trip from Japan. Barney then decides that they should fly to Philadelphia just because two beautiful ladies are also heading there. Barney calls Marshall (who is supposed to be busy studying) to come to Philadelphia in the Fiero, because it is going to be "legendary." Ted and Barney eventually find out that these two girls have boyfriends who are players for the Philadelphia Eagles. Furthermore, Ted and Barney are taken into custody by airport security, since they left luggage on a carousel in JFK. They are held there for a while, but are released when Barney's luggage at JFK is revealed to have only condoms and a PowerBar. They then go with Sascha, an attractive airport guard, to what turns out to be a boring party. Barney, upon meeting someone who works security for the Liberty Bell, decides that it would be "legendary" to go lick the landmark. Ted initially declines, but after Barney tells Ted that he is his best friend, Ted reluctantly goes along. During this whole time, Ted and Barney call Marshall, telling him to either turn around and go back home because nothing exciting is happening, or to come because it will be "legendary."

Meanwhile, Lily and Robin go to the bar for a girl's night out. Lily becomes jealous of Robin because of the attention she receives from men at the bar, and realizes that no one wants to approach a woman wearing an engagement ring. She asks Marshall if she can take her engagement ring off, to which Marshall says yes. Lily then tries to attract men, but is still unsuccessful, getting only a gay man who told her that she sat on a grape. Robin is annoyed by the change in Lily's behavior, and convinces Lily that she has what most single women want: a good boyfriend. The gay man offers to help remove the grape stain, and Marshall walks in just as he is doing so. Marshall, who came only because he had second thoughts about Lily removing the ring, was ready to fight the man, but is hugely relieved to learn that the man is gay, mostly because he will not have to fight. Just then, however, the man's boyfriend, also the jealous type, punches Marshall out.
