2. I don't know the reason why he failed in the midterm exam. 先行词，reason
3. We all remember the day when we became the students of ... School. 先行词，day
4. Guangzhou is a place with a lot of cultural legacies which are well-protected. 先行词，legacies
另外第三题中的关系代词不能用that，必须用when或者on which，因为那一天是这句话的时间。

为什么第一句用which，先行词city不是一个地方么？可以用where么？

city是一个地方没错，但是你想想，你平时说visit的时候是不是直接visit+地点的？
我所说的地点指的是地点状语，因为你们入学的时候肯定是说on the day，所以才要on which或者when做关系代词
但是visit的话，地点就是visit的宾语了，因为大家都直接“visit Guangzhou”，所以就是用that或者which了啊，不可以用where
关于killersheng同学说我照抄他答案的问题，也许我的确在结构上和措辞上跟他有些地方不谋而合了，要我另起炉灶重新再写也不是不可以。

我也不喜欢别人一堆大话讲给我听，我把我自己的理解方法说给你：这里的关系代词需要指代广东这个地方，而which就是指代物的，visit 后面不加介词所以用which
你是想知道为什么不用where是吧
这句话里，后半句可以改为陈述句：A lot of people visited Guangdong every year
visit后面是直接加广东，所以不需要用where
而需要用where的句子是这样的：Guangdong is a place where we stay for 20 years
这句话改为陈述句是we stayed in Guangdong for 20 years，而句子里省略了in
这里广东前面应该加个介词in，所以不用which 用where或者in which
所以：判断whcih 和where的依据可以是：先把句子改为陈述句。
然后看指代的名词前面是否省略了介词（at，in， on）什么的，如果省略了，用where，如果没省略，即不加介词也可以，则用which
