叶片通过呼吸作用挥发水分，这些挥发的水分来源于树干，树枝的供应，一旦脱离树枝，叶片就会慢慢枯萎。
泡在水里面可以延缓枯萎的过程，叶片本身虽然可以少量吸取水分，但是这样的吸取形式并不是正常的生长方式，而且长期泡在水里面，容易导致减少与空气的接触，不能正常呼吸，从而腐烂。
