We have known for a long time that flowers of different plants open and close at different time of day. This is so familiar that there seems to be no need to ask the reason for it. Yet no one really understands why flowers open and close like this at particular times. The process (过程) is not as simple as we might think, as recent experiments have shown. In one study, flowers were kept in constant (连续的) darkness. We might expect that the flowers, without any information about the time of day, did not open as they normally do. In fact, they continued to open at their usual time. This suggests that they have some mysterious (神秘的) way of knowing the time. Their sense of time does not depend on information from the outside world; it is, so to speak, inside them, a kind of “inner clock”.
This discovery (发现) may not seem to be very important. However, it was later found that not just plants but also animals —including man —have this “inner clock” which controls the working of their bodies and influences (影响) their activities. Men, then, are also influenced by this mysterious power. Whether we wish it or not, it affects such things in our life as our need for sleep, our need for food.
In the past, this did not matter very much because people lived in natural condition. In the modern world, things are different; now there are spacemen, airplane pilots and, in ordinary life, a lot of people who have to work at night. It would be very useful, then, to know more about the “inner clock”. Such ordinary things as flowers might help us understand more about ourselves.
1. A recent experiment showed that ________________.
A. different flowers open and close at different times of day
B. for their opening and closing, flowers do not need information from the outside world
C. flowers are influenced by weak light even when they are in a dark room
D. flowers can be used for telling the time
2. The “inner clock” _________________________.
A. is an unimportant discovery B. is only found in animals
C. has not been understood by far D. has an effect on human life
3. Further study of the “inner clock” will be useful because ________________.
A. it might help us in some way
B. we do not yet understand plants and animals well enough
C. the number of spacemen and airplane pilots is fast increasing
D. we should try to live more naturally than we do now
4. Kept in constant darkness, flowers ________________________.
A. will not open or close as usual B. will not open any longer
C. will open as they do in natural conditions D. will always remain in full blossom (开花)
5. ________________ have a mysterious power of knowing time without information from the outside world.
A. Animals including man as well as plants B. All living things except man
C. Flowers are the only things in the world that D. Neither animals nor plants

One night about nine o'clock. Dr. Eyck,a surgeon(外科医生),had a phone call from Dr. Haydon at the hospital in Clans Falls. The surgeon was asked to go there at once to operate on a very sick boy who shot himself while playing with a gun.
The doctor was soon on his way to Clans Falls. It was 60 miles away. And it was snowing heavily in the sky. The surgeon thought he could get there before 12 o'clock. A few minutes later, the doctor was stopped by a man in an old black coat. Gun in hand, the man ordered the doctor to get out. Then the man drove the car down the road, leaving the doctor in the falling snow.
It was after two o'clock in the morning when the doctor arrived at the hospital in Clans Falls. Dr. Haydon told him that the boy had died an hour before. The two doctors walked by the door of the hospital waiting room. There sat the man in the old black coat with his head in his hands.

Passage 2
Red is used in many American expressions. It can be used to show happiness, as in the expression “a red-letter day”. This is a day when something special happens. The expression is probably based on church customs. For almost 600 years, church calendars have been marked with red to show special holy days. Today’s calendars are still marked that way with the dates of holidays and special days printed in red.
The expression “a red-letter day” is often heard in everyday life. “A red-letter day” is a day that people are especially happy. It may be a day that you have long waited for, a wedding day, for example. Or it may be a day with a happy surprise. You might tell a friend that yesterday was a red-letter day, because you won some money in the lottery.
“Rolling out the red carpet” is another commonly heard expression. It describes an especially warm welcome of any kind. A city may “roll out the red carpet” for its baseball team, when the team arrives home after winning a championship. A group of supporters go to the airport to greet the team. The red-carpet welcome includes a lot of cheering by thousands of fans, a parade, music and speeches of praise by local politicians.
Red is also used in some expressions that are not happy. “Red-handed” is one. To be caught “red-handed” is to be found in an act of wrong doing. The evidence is clear. You are guilty.
Today we use the expression to be caught “red-handed” in situations that are not serious. For example, a mother might say she caught her son red-handed, taking cookies out of the cookie jar.
Choose the best answer for each question.
( ) 1. The expression “a red-letter day” perhaps first came from _______.
A. English customs B. church calendars
C. weekdays D. a dictionary
( ) 2. You can say it’s a red-letter day if _______ on that day.
A. you find a good job B. you borrow some money
C. you are free D. you write a letter to your friend
( ) 3. We usually roll out the red carpet when _______.
A. a friend of ours drops by our house
B. someone is going to leave
C. we give someone a warm welcome
D. we move into a new house
( ) 4. You are caught “red-handed” when your teacher _______ in class.
A. sees you putting up your hand
B. finds you talking
C. asks you some questions
D. says you are clever
( ) 5. Which is the best title of this passage?
A. Red Is a Useful Color
B. How to Use Red
C. Red in Some Expressions
D. What’s a Red-letter Day
E. Answer the questions
Nowadays there is less and less contact(联络) between the old and the young. There are mainly four reasons for this, including the breakdown of the big family, working parents with little time to take care of their child, families that have moved away, and smaller flats with no room for grandparents. But the results are the same - increasing numbers of children without grandparents and old people who have no contact with children, more old people who are lonely and feel useless, and more and more families with young children who need more love and care. It’s a big problem in many countries.
Now intergenerational (代际交流) programmes, designed to bring the old and the young together, are growing popular all over the world. There are successful examples of such programmes. There are schemes(方案) which involve older people visiting families who are having problems, maybe looking after the children for a while to give the tired mother a break. Or “adopt a grandparent” schemes in which children write letters or visit a lonely old person in their area. One successful scheme in London pairs(使结对) young volunteer with old people who are losing their sight. The young people help with practical things such as reading newspapers, reading bank statements and helping with shopping, and the older people can pass on their knowledge and experience to their young visitors. For example, a retired judge may be paired with a teenager who wants to study law.
If older people can understand and accept the youth of today, and so do the youth, there will be less conflict(矛盾) in the world.
99. Is there more and more contact between the old and the young?

If you lose 12 times in a row (连续地), will you just give up? Dale Carnegie, a pioneer in public speaking and self-development, kept trying. And he became famous by showing people how to be successful.
Carnegie was born in 1888 to a poor farming family in the central United States. The boy didn't see a train until he was 12 years old. In his teens, he had to get up at 3 a.m. every day to milk the cows in his family.
When Carnegie first entered college, he felt hopeless because of his clothes and ordinary looks. His mother encouraged him: "Why not try to be better in other things instead of just dress and good looks?"
Carnegie tried to be more active in college. He joined the debate team (辩论队).But one after another, he lost 12 times. The young man was very disappointed in himself. He said later that he thought of killing himself after so many failures.
But soon Carnegie was seen practicing public speaking on the riverside. His hard work paid off (得到好结果)at last. In 1906, Carnegie won a famous speech contest and became widely known.
The young man made his own words come true: "Believe that you will suc¬ceed, and you will."
In order to share his success , Carnegie opened schools and wrote books. His best-sellers include "How to Win Friends and Influence(影响)People" and "How to Stop Worrying and Start Living". More than 50 million copies of his books have been printed in 38 languages. They are still helping people on the road to success.
93. How many times did Carnegie lose in a row in public speaking?
94. Why did Carnegie feel hopeless when he first entered college?
95. What did he try to do after his mother encouraged him?
96. Were his copies of the books printed in the same language?
97. How did you like Carnegie?
98. From the passage, what is the most important on the road to success?
