Mo Yan was born in 1955, in Gaomi County in Shandong to a family of farmers. When he was 11, he left school to work as a farmer. At the age of 18, he worked at a cotton factory. During this time, he read many novels.
"Mo Yan"---meaning "don't speak" in Chinese--is his pen name. The name comes from a warning from his parents not to speak his mind while outside in 1950s. In 1976, Mo Yan joined the PLA and began to write while he was a soldier. In 1984, he received an award from the PLA Magazine. He published his first book, A Transparent Radish, in 1984, and Red Sorghum in 1986. He became a famous writer. In 2012, Mo Yan got the Nobel Prize for Literature.
