人们都在关心，胡锦涛主席此次访美将对中美关系产生什么样的影响？有中美交流“关键先生”之称的中国前驻美大使周文重把胡主席此次访美看作中美关系新十年的“定调之旅”。这和美国学者的看法刚好不谋而合。

Bush administration, said, It is absolutely critical for the two sides to be setting a tone that says 'hang on a second, we are committed to an effective, positive relationship.'
美国国际战略研究中心学者查尔斯·弗里曼说：“中美两国定下未来关系的基调十分关键，这一基调应该是‘不要急，双方都要致力于建立富有成效、且积极向上的双边关系’。
文中的set a tone就是指“定调”，也就是定下基调的意思。Tone在这里是指tone of relationship(双边关系的基调，风格)，而此次胡锦涛主席访美还可以set diplomatic tone(确定外交关系的基调)。
此外，call the tune或者call the shots也可以表示“定调子”，这时强调的是“掌权、有决定权”的意思。比如In this part of the mortgage market, the banks call the tune。(在抵押信贷市场这一领域，银行有权定调。) 形容具有重要历史意义的访问，我们还可以用landmark visit来表示，比如President Hu kicks off landmark US visit。具有如此划时代意义的访问，还将open a new chapter in Sino-US relations(开启中美关系的新篇章)
