改句有误，改后that不能代替brother作后面从句的主语，从而使从句缺少主语。

who was ..twenty years before 定语从句，修饰主句先行词brother

2、例句分析

1）例1中的brother是后面who引导从句的先行词，who was thought=brother was thought,从句谓语动词thought的宾语是brother。不定式to have done，是thought的宾语补足语。
即 sb was thought to have been done的格式
主动语态为 thought sb to have done

2）例2的句子，可以分两种方法去理解
A.that 在从句中担当成分 代指brother作从句主语，that=brother
who was thought that had been...这样把brother 代入句中看的话，就成了：
brother was thought (that)brother had been..的形式
造成句意重复，brother不能当thought宾语的同时，又担当从句的主语，也就是说thought如果后面接双宾语的话，这两个宾语应该不是同一个名词，即不是同一个brother。

B.that 在从句中不担当成分 只起连接作用,that只为从属连词，可省略但没省。
