HarrisonA.“Stormy”Storms,Jr.ledtheNorthAmericanX-15designteam,alongwithprojectenginee... Harrison A. “Stormy” Storms, Jr. led theNorth American X-15 design team, along withproject engineer Charles H. F&r. These twohad a difficult job ahead of them, for althoughgiving the appearance of having a rather simpleconfiguration, the X-15 was perhaps themost technologically complex single-seat aircraftof its day. Directly assisting Storms andF&z was test pilot A. Scott Crossfield, whohad worked for the NACA prior to joiningNorth American with the intended purpose ofworking on the X-15 program. Crossfielddescribes Storms as “...a man of wonderfulimagination, technical depth, and courage...with a love affair with the X-15. He was atremendous ally and kept the objectivity of theprogram intact ...,” According to Crossfield,Feltz was “... a remarkable ‘can do and did’engineer who was very much a source of thex- I5 s”cceSS story.“’ Storms himself remembers his first verbalinstructions from Hartley Soul& “You have alittle airplane and a big engine with a largethrust margin. We want to go to 250,000 feetaltitude and Mach 6. We want to study acredynamicheating. We do not want to worryabout aerodynamic stability and control, orthe airplane breaking up. So if you make anyerrms, make them on the strong side. Youshould have enough thrust to do the job.”Adds Storms, “and so we did.“* Crossfield’s X-15 input proved particularlynoteworthy during the early days of thedevelopment program as his experience permittedthe generation of logical argumentsthat led to major improvements to the X-15.He played a key role, for instance, in convincingthe Air Force that an encapsulatedejection system was both impractical andunnecessary. His arguments in favor of anejection seat, capable of permitting safeemergency egress at speeds between 80 mphand Mach 4 and altitudes from sea levelto 120,000 feet, saved significant money, weight, and development time. There has been considerable interest overwhether Crossfield made the right decisionin leaving the NACA since it effectivelylocked him out of the high-speed, high-altitudeportion of the X-15 flight program.Crossfield has no regrets: “._. I made theright decision to go to North American. I aman engineer, aerodynamicist, and designer bytraining .._ While I would very much haveliked to participate in the flight research program,I am pretty well convinced that I wasneeded to supply a lot of the impetus thatallowed the program to succeed in timeliness,in resources, and in technical return. _..I was on the program for nine years fromconception to closing the circle in flight test.Every step: concept, criteria, requirements, performance specifications, detailed specifications, manufacturing, quality control, andflight operations had all become an (obsession]to tight for, protect, and share-almostwith a passion.“ 展开
