1 INTRODUCTION

This is a description of the communication between automated warehouse and CONVEYOR PC.
Automated Warehouse System is known as AS/RS (Automatic storage and retrieval system) and
Level 2 Warehouse, which KONECRANES is providing. This document is Interface Design
Specification, IDS between these two material handling computers.

1.1 Purpose

The purpose of this document is to form a common understanding of how the AS/RS (Level 2
Warehouse) system is to communicate with CONVEYOR PC and its intended operating
environment. The document represents an agreement between customer and KONECRANES
regarding the purpose, function and operational characteristics of the AS/RS system supplied by
KONECRANES for the project at Mill facility.

1.2 AS/RS System Overview

The AS/RS system will track rolls coming into the roll warehouse to the point at which they
leave and are processed out. AS/RS will purge rolls from its inventory when delivered rolls out
from the warehouse.

1.3 Major Components

The first major component of the AS/RS is a computer. The second set of components are Crane
Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC's) by Siemens S7, provided by KONECRANES. The
warehouse crane has its own PLC for individual control of the crane functions. The PLC's are
used in LEVEL I of the automation system.

The CONVEYOR computer and Conveyor PLC, is a major components of the Conveyor
Automation System. This unit is used as a coordinator of activity for the conveyor automation.
The Conveyor PLC's are associated on a one to one basis with conveyor capable of moving a roll
into and out of the storage. Konecranes doesn’t provide any software or hardware to Conveyor
Automation System (look at figure 1.1).
