Popsicles (冰棒)
In 1905, a boy, Frank Epperson, was mixing soda with water to make soda pop (汽水). He accidentally left the mixing bucket outside. During the night the mixture was froze solid, with the wooden stirring stick (搅拌棒) standing straight up. But the frozen pop tasted great! Frank started selling his frozen pop for five cents, which was later named popsicles.
Chocolate Chip Cookies (巧克力曲奇)
In 1930, Ruth Wakefield was making chocolate cookies at the Toll House Inn in Massachusetts. When she ran out of baking chocolate, Ruth broke a bar of semi-sweet chocolate into little pieces and added them to the dough (面团). When the cookies were baked, the chocolate hadn’t melted. Instead there were little chips of chocolate throughout the cookie. It became popular soon among the guests.
Potato Chips (薯片)
One day in 1853, a diner (用餐者) at Moon Lake Lodge in New York refused to eat an order of French fries because they were too thick. The chef, George Crum, then fried thinner French fries, but the customer still rejected them. Crum decided to teach the diner a lesson. He sliced a potato paper-thin and fried it so heavily that it could not be cut with a fork. But the customer loved them. Soon other customers were also asking for potato chips. 展开
