Ricky Martin,a Latin singer from Puerto Rico,became a "friendship envoy" of China's largest city Shanghai on Monday.At a news conference held in China's highest building Jinmao Tower,Martin
received a "golden key"to the city from Yang Xiaodu,vice major of Shanghai.

Martin said at the conference that as Shanghai's friendship envoy,he would try his best to introduce Shanghai to the world.

Ricky Martin has been performing since he was a child.He also appeared in TV advertisements.When he was twelve he joined the boy-band Menudo.To keep the youthful image of the band,members had to
leave at the age of 16.Martin went on to follow an acting career in the American soap opera General Hospital.In it he played a barman and part-time singer. Later he began a very successful solo singing career.

Singing in both Spanish and English,Ricky Martin has brought Latin music to a wider world audience.In 1998 his hit "The Cup of Life" was chosen as the official song for the World Cup.Soon the song became popular in many countries.
