The MyriaNed WSN differs in some aspects to what is available today, like ZigBee Mica Motes and others. First of all it is based on gossiping. This is the main starting point and philosophy of MyriaNed. The ideas are researched at the Free University of Amsterdam (VU), by Prof. Maarten van Steen [Steen]. Today there is an extensive cooperation between his group and DevLab. Because the nature of gossiping news items in a WSN is so different from routing them in a“classic” way, we have developed our own Medium Access Controller (MAC), called gMac. The basic properties of this MAC is that it does broadcast transmissions of the news items. This implies that the MAClayer
doesn't need to have an ID or network address. However, there might be a need
to have an ID assigned to each individual node. This is implemented outside the MAC, mostly as part of the application. What is also important for a WSN application is that it is very energy efficient. Because the radio is the most energy consuming part of a WSN node, gMac has special properties that addresses this issue. gMac uses a Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) message communication protocol with a very tight synchronisation mechanism between the nodes. The following sections will go into more detail on these issues.
