He decided that if he was ever questioned by Luther Livingston or any of his other investors, he would simply say that he had been intoxicated on “shipowner punch” when he made the commitment to fund and he just didn’t feel right about putting their money into such a venture. Intoxication didn’t seem like a great defense to any accusation, but it was the truth – and he hoped that the truth would set him free. He had no idea just how ‘free’ he would become.

The only problem with the plan was that he didn’t have enough actual money to pay for the ship in his PA. He also didn’t have enough time to get a mortgage loan against the vessel, assuming he could find a willing ship lender in the post credit crisis world.
