How men first learnt to invent words is unknown; in other words, the origin of language is a mystery. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented cer?
tain sounds to express thought and feelings, actions and things, so that they could communi? cate with each other; and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called
letters, which could be combined to present those sounds, and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, we call words.
The power of words, then, lies in their associations—the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we
live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something increases.
Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and emotions. This charming and
telling use of words is what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his meaning in words which sing like music and which by
their position and associa?tion can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately, or they will make our speech silly and
vulgar.

1.D 原文中有 the origin of language is a mystery。没说是secret ,也没说很难回答。B,C错。A的意思是流传下来的传奇,明显错误。应选D。
2.D 原文中to express thought and feelings, actions and things, 排除A,B。which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, we call words.排除C。
3.D 原文解释the things they bring up before our minds意思是它在我们脑海里带来的东西。D是“代表的东西”最符合。ABC均是特性特质的意思,不符。
4.B 在脑海中浮现的东西。B项最符合。具体可参见第三题。
5.A A项意思是说“他不如一个语言的掌控者”,而文中是the real poet is a master of words,意思不符,BCD项在文中最后一段均有说明,是正确的。
希望可以帮到你,这些都是我自己想自己做的,如果与标准答案不符请见谅哈~英语短文本来就是个见仁见智的东西。 希望你能采纳我的答案。(看在我打了这么多字的份上吧。。)

1C 原文说The origin of language是mystery,秘密的,是没人知道的。而不是传奇、或者难以回答的疑问。
2D A错在不是只有feelings, 原文说Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, we call words.因此选C3题感觉选D 4B 5no more than 就是只不过的意思,A项片面了
