PEOPLE call him the mad scientist, but J. Craig Venter, 63, has never stopped working to try to create life. Last month, the American scientist and his team made great progress. They created the world’s first artificial cell (人造细胞). They hope they can use it to make new kinds of life in the future. Venter believes the new kinds of life will produce food, oil, and medicine for us.

It’s not the only area where Venter is making news. In another project, he and his team are traveling the seas and collecting microbes (微生物). Venter hopes that by studying them, they can make new microbes that can take in CO2.

He has also learned more about himself by mapping (绘图) his own DNA. The results are changing what he eats and the way he lives. After he found that he has a high risk of heart problems, he changed to a healthier diet.

Venter was born in California, US in 1946. He was a naughty kid. He had poor grades and often got into trouble at school. In 1967 he served in the US Navy in Vietnam (越南) at a hospital. That experience changed his life.

He dealt with the death of thousands of men the same age as him. “I had to learn in real time what death really meant,” he said. “It was a life-changing experience. That is where my sense of responsibility (责任) comes from.”

Venter returned to the US after the war and studied medical (医学的) science for five years. In 1984 he joined a US government program to do research on human genes (基因). Later he set up his own research company.

“A doctor can save maybe a few hundred lives in a lifetime,” he told his brother when he started his scientific career (职业). “A researcher can save the whole world.”
