3.1. Effect of processing on mechanical damage
The damage to the seed increased by2.9% (on average) in the vertical bucket elevator (Table 2).
The reason for this maybe that the seed layer receives impact when the elevator cups lift it and
again when the seed is discharged at the deliveryend under centrifugal force. In addition, the freefall
of seed on to the pan of the grader causes damage. The damage, which was 18%, was observed
in the form of splits or seed coat cracks. The air-screen cleaner removed the split and damaged
seeds and therefore, onlya loss of 2% was noticed after size grading. Losses below 1% were
observed after gravityseparation. The m:c: had a significant effect on the physical damage
sustained. The seed lots at 12% m:c: suffered less mechanical damage than the lots at 10% and
11% m:c:
3.2. Effect of processing on seed germination
There was significant loss in germination when the vertical bucket elevator lifted the seed
(Table 3). The air-screen cleaner improved the average germination of seed lots by1.8%. It also
removed other impurities like shriveled seed, undersized seed, and splits during processing. The
air-screen cleaner and gravityseparator both significantlyimproved the germination rate of the remaining seed byremoving damaged seeds. Similar results have been reported by Misra et al.
(1985).
The m:c: had significant effects on germination of seed lots. The seed lots with 12% m:c: lost an
average of 3% germination while the seed lots with 10% m:c: lost an average of 5% germination.
3.3. Effect of processing on the vigor index of the seed
The vigor index of the seed dropped significantlyafter the elevating stage (Table 4). The seed at
12% m:c: showed a higher vigor index than that of lower m:c: Similar to germination, the vigor of the seed improved significantlyafter size grading. The loss in vigor occurred mainlyin the first stage of handling where maximum mechanical damage had taken place.
3.4. Effect on storage as measured by accelerated aging test
The germination of the untreated seed lots, after the accelerated aging test, was 72% (average)
and the germination did not decline after size and gravitygrading (Table 5). The accelerated aging
test showed that the lots at 12% m:c: maintained higher germination than the lots processed at
10% and 11% m:c: The lots at 10% m:c: suffered maximum damage during processing which
reflected their poor storage quality.
