Experimental Investigation. The objectives of the experimental studies included building an experimental laboratory system to study exclusively the behavior of heavy paraffi in waxy crudes, thus eliminating effects of other typical impurities such as as-phaltenes; investigating thermal and pressure effects on viscoelas-tic moduli using a CSR; evaluating isothermal gelation kinetics; and determining pressure effects on gel strength using a model pipeline setup and CSR.
Materials. Model wax/oil mixtures were prepared from house-hold paraffin (Gulf Wax) and MultiTherm PG-1 mineral oil. Five samples of 5, 10, 15, 20, and 30 wt% wax in mineral oil were used for WAT and pour point (PP) measurements. The WAT was measured with both a Carl Zeiss microscope (equipped with the powerful Olympus DP70 camera system and the INSTEC TS62 thermal stage) and the Anton Paar DMA 5000 density meter while the pour point was measured only with the density meter. The 5, 10, and 20 wt% samples were used for rheometric tests while only the 20 wt% sample was used for the model pipeline tests because it exhibited reasonable yield stress, which was the major parameter of interest.
All samples, as well as the paraffin wax, were analyzed with the GC 8000 Top Series high-temperature gas chromatograph (HTGC) equipped with hydrogen-flame ionization detector (FID) and the DB-HT column 30m×0.32mm×0.1μm film. The carbon distribu-tion of the paraffin wax is presented in Fig. 2.
