Although evidence supports the importance of active job search in securing desirable employment, these findings could be contingent upon having efficient labor markets that provide both job seekers and employers with information regarding their respective needs. The effectiveness of active job search is largely based on job applicant’s ability to gather information about employment opportunities and the associated type of employment. If labor markets rely on informal modes of recruitment more than formal modes of recruitment, then the difficulty of job applicants to get information about employment opportunities diminishes the effectiveness of job search efforts.
The relationship between labor market information and active job search is unclear. On one hand, one could logically infer that if the recruiters provide information to job candidates about job openings, job candidates would find it easier to search intensely for jobs. The availability of information makes it easier to structure a job search campaign. On the other hand, job seekers lack of sufficient information might involve in more active job search to compensate for the lack of control over the job search process. Saks and Ashforth (1999) found that university graduates’ lack of control over job search was related with active job seeking. In China, with less job information, job applicants would try their best to compete in the job market by engaging in more job search activities. Thus, we put forward a research question which seeks to clarify how different contexts are likely to influence the level of active job search by job applicants in the United States and in China
R Q 1. To what extent does active job search vary between the United States and China?
Active job search is likely to be more effective in terms of securing desirable employment when information is readily available to job seekers. Job seekers need to know about job opportunities, need to be aware of work demands, and need to understand compensation practices. Information is used to first identify employment opportunities and then compare actual employment opportunities with potential employment opportunities. Information is also important to help determine the degree a work situation is compatible with one’s identity (Herriot, 2004). Thus, an applicant with good information may take the risk of turning down an undesirable employment opportunity with the knowledge that there are other potentially better employment opportunities. Mistakes can be made either way in terms of rejecting an employment opportunity in hopes of securing a better job. However, good information can insure a better choice. Without that information, job search efforts are likely to be misguided and ineffective. 展开
