Please find the PO / MTBE production facility's wastewater results listed below:
The only result that was not expected is the detection of chloroform in the sample of 2/22/2011.
This was the only sample in which it was detected. Whether or not this is a mis-identification is not known at this time.
Sodium:
The high level of sodium is due to the caustic injection used to neutralize the methyl formate in MTBE reactor material.
The plant uses ~ 5500 lb/hr of 17wt% NaOH ==> 935 lb/hr NaOH ==> 540 lb/hr Na
The wastewater volume is approx. 61,000 lb/hr
The sodium content is 540 / 61,000 * 1e6 = 8800ppm
This is in line with the analytical finding of approx. 8000 ppm (on average)
Note: ~ 200 ppm of NaOH is required to produce the 11.8 pH
Dissolved solids:
The caustic neutralizes the MeF to produce sodium formate (NaCHO2)
At a level of 8800 ppm, the sodium formate equivalent would be 1550 lb/hr
In the wastewater flow rate of 61,000 lb/hr, the dissolved sodium formate salt would be at approx. 25 g/L
This is inline with the analytical finding of approx. 23 g/L dissolved solids.
