The Kingdom of Lu had a law stating one may reimburse a ransom from the State Treasury if it is paid to redeem a Lu citizen who's slaved in other kingdoms. Once Zigong (Ci Duanmu), a Confucius disciple, redeemed a Lu citizen from another kingdom but, upon his return, he refused to accept the kingdom's reimbursement. Confucius said:"Ci, what you did was inappropriate. From now on, no Lu citizen would be willing to save their slaved fellow countryman. Accepting the kingdom's reimbursement wouldn't damage the value of your deed. However, if you refuse it, the others would be discouraged for such redemption (for there's no incentive)."

Zilu rescued a drowning man, who offered Zilu an ox in appreciation. Zilu accepted it. Confucius said:"Now the Lu people are encouraged to save the drowning ones."

Confucius can see results from details, because he has such a far perspective on the development of events.
