This can be achieved by the careful distribution of accents over an area without necessarily spacing them equally each side of an axis.The lopsided effect of a garden,with all the weight in one part,can be an irritation.
Unity
The component parts--lawn,borders,paved areas and separate small enclosures such a rose garden--will each be a pleasing feature,but they must be sited and shaped so that they fit together as surely as a jigsaw to form an equally pleasing whole.
Elegance of Line ant Shape
It is as easy to maintain a good shape as a bad one,and an effort should be make to design lines which are pleasing,curves without jags,which flow and carry the eye from one part of the garden to another.
Contrast and Harmony
There is great scope in the bringing together of shapes which enhance each other,curves flowing harmoniously together or by contrast,straight with curve.In the planting of the garden there are endless opportunities for experiment which lead to originality.The contrast of fine foliage with coarse,rounded outlines with vertical or spiked growth,,the harmony of blended flower and foliage colours,and the sharp contrast of white flowers against red,yellow against purple are examples.
