Fifth, past firm performance may be an indicator of current acquisition performance. While previous research on the influence of past performance has not provided clear evidence (Ramaswamy, 1997), we controlled for prior acquirer performance with a measure of the 2-year industry-adjusted average return on assets prior to the acquisition.
