当有朋友在晚上来探访，他们不断地告诉我们要走了，他们总是在看手表。这不是因为我们的朋友都很忙。这只是因为我们家里没有电视机。他们认为我们很奇怪。
「那你们晚上怎么打发时间？」他们总是这样的问。答案很简单。我和妻子都有自己的爱好。当然我们不会在晚上盯着墙壁看。我的妻子喜欢烹饪、绘画，常常在晚上学外语。我对集邮感兴趣。我们两个都喜欢听音乐和下棋。有时，屋里停电，变得漆黑一片。我们不会担心，因为我们可以燃起蜡烛，与对方聊聊日间发生的事。当这种情况发生在我们的朋友身上，他们会很懊恼，因为没有电视机，他们不知道该做些什么来打发时间。

When our friends come to visit us in the evening, they keep on telling us they have to leave and they always look at their watches. It isn't because our friends are all busy. It is just because we don't have a TV set. They think that we are very strange.
"What do you do in the evening?" they always ask like this. The answer is very simple. Both my wife and I have hobbies. We certainly don't spend our evenings looking at the walls. My wife enjoys cooking and painting and often takes foreign language classes in the evenings. I have an interest in collecting stamps. Both of us enjoy listening to music and playing chess together. Sometimes there is power cut and the house becomes dark. We don't get worried because we can just light a candle and chat with each other about what happened during our day. When this happens to our friends, they are sad because they don't know what to do without a TV set.
