什麼是历史？历史指的是人类过去经验的总合，凡是人类过去经验发生的一切，都是历史。可是历史知识、历史学不等於历史。历史是曾经存在，但是过去就没有了的东西。例如说一九三五年在台湾发生的任何事情，都是历史，都是历史的一部份。但是我们不可能复原历史当中所有发生过的事情。历史学、历史知识和历史之间，总是存在著一道鸿沟。历史学一直不断努力想要尽量将过去曾经发生过的事情保留下来，予以重建，但能保留的、能重建的，永远只能是真实历史中间的一小部分并且是重要部分。
历史这麼大，可只能从中选取部分，予以保留，予以重建重现，表达出来。历史就像地图一样。每一张地图都有其比例尺，比例尺就意味著要将现实缩小，在缩小过程中，也就排除掉一些东西。安伯托．艾可（Umberto Eco）有一篇文章讲「一比一」的地图。那张地图是覆盖在整个地球表面的一大张纸。「一比一」的地图不会遗漏任何东西，然而「一比一」的地图没有办法用，也没有人要用。地图要有用，必然要缩小，要将一些东西排除在外，如此才方便。比例尺越小，一小张就能涵盖越大的范围，然而相对地，能保留的讯息就越少。历史学也是如此。
最完整的一种历史知识，和历史之间是一比一的关系，把过去所发生的任何事情如实、钜细靡遗，如同时间倒流般，全都搬上来给我们。这种历史知识只存在於想像中，现实里不会有。现实的历史知识必定经过选择，选择众多历史讯息中的一小部分，将之化为可传述、可理解的史学内容。

What is history? History is the summation of the human past experience. all the human past experienced is history. However, history knowledge and historiography is not equal to history. History is that once existed but not something. For example, all the events, happened in TAIWAN in 1935, are a part of history. But we cannot recovery those happened matters. There is a wide gap between Historiography, history knowledge and History. Historiography constantly strive to preserve the occurred matters and rebuild it. But those canbe reserved and rebuilt are only a small and important part in history. History is vast, we can only select section to reserve and reconstruct reappear it. History is like a map. And each map has its own scale. The scale means to shrink the reality, and we have to remove something. One article written by Umberto Eco described “one to one” map.The map is a huge paper to cover the whole earth surface. It does not omit anything. However, this kind of map is useless, and nobody want to use it. The map must be micrified to be useful, and exclude something, then it would be convenient. The smaller the scale is, the wider the map will be cover, the less message it keeps. So does History. The complete history knowledge is “one to one” comparing with History, it shows us all the images to us just as we turn back to the past. It actually is only in our mind, not in reality. The history knowledge is bound to be selected, and select one section from History to transfer to narrated, apprehensible historical content.
