Near the north end of the park, the Altar of Prayer for Good Harvests (Qigutan) is perhaps one of the best known symbols for Beijing and China, its round, triple layer cone-shaped roof is truly something to behold, It was built in 1420 and the roof was three colours representing the Heavens (blue)，the Emperor (yellow) and the bottom layer was the common people (brown). In 1 752 alf of the eaves were painted heavenly blue and they remained that way until the hall was struck by lightning and burned in 1889．It was rebuilt the following year and renovated once again in 1970.
