1. My own experience in learning English
A. My weaknesses
I’m not very satisfied with my English learning. Lack of vocabularies limits my expressions. It’s so common that I cannot find a proper word to express my opinion which embarrassed me so much. Besides, I’m a bit shy to communicate with others in English so it is not easy for me to talk with English-speaking people. Furthermore, my writing needs to be improved as I haven’t pay much attention to it, for me there is a lot to improve. In addition, it may be a common weakness that laziness prevents me from learning regularly, once corrected, my English will be developed rapidly—I’d like to make a promise about it.
B. My strength
Thanks to my High School English teacher Mrs. Mao, my pronunciation is quite good. When I’m reading, I enjoy the rhythm of words and sentences flooding from my mouth. I am very interested in language learning and have tried to learn the histories of England and America. So when it comes to something related to the countries’ background, it is easier for me to understand.
2. Some believes about English learning of mine
A. The importance of talent
As far as I’m concerned, the gift of language learning is a great gift god has presented. Those who have this talent are easier and more quickly to be the master. Of course, everyone has the opportunity to learn English well, but some people should make up with hardworking as for their shortage of talent.
B. If you want to learn a second language, you should really take a course.
Learning by oneself is a quite effective way, but not so fit in English learning. For most of us, a good course and an experienced teacher will help us a lot.
C. Learning grammar is not the best way to learn a foreign language.
Chinese students who got high scores in English are almost a professor of English grammar. Though grammar is useful to a certain degree, but there are some more important aspects to focus on. So, to spend a lot of time on learning the boring grammar is not wise.
D. It’s not necessary to master a large amount of vocabularies.
Vocabulary is the base of English learning. At different period, we’re required to master quite amount of words. But it doesn’t mean to remember more words, English is better. It is said in BBC’s reporting, there are nearly 2,000 thousand words used to express so much information; it indicates English is so magical. So it is not necessary to master large amount of vocabularies, enough is the best.
3. My suggestion on oral English
The first problem is to select one style of spoken-English. There are two main kinds of oral English for us to choose—British and American. Some like the British one for its purity and some prefer the mixed one. It doesn’t matter to learn which style, because both have their own advantages. As far as I’m concerned I love American English for its fashion and easy to use, furthermore, it really sweeps many barriers for me to watch American TV series.
Secondly, I want to talk about the pronunciation. It has been discussed by many people whether learners should aim to speak English with a native-speaker pronunciation. My answer is:”Of course!” If a peddler talks with a serious accent, it’s no matter. But if we are going to get more information and to learn from the elite through English, accent really works. We cannot lower out standard because of the lack of English-speaking environment. If we can speak native English, it will be easy to be accepted by foreigners whom we’re talking to. It’s not realistic to require everyone equipped with a native pronunciation, but we should try our best as it’s worthy. To sum for this topic: more native, more competitive.
