Quoting the words from the old man in the novel the Old man and the Sea, "a man is not inborn defeated.""A man may be destroyed but never defeated.". In order to put these ideas into action, the old man, Santiago put himself in endless pain and struggle.
Santiago, is a very interesting character. He was considered a loser in life, a mentally wrong old man who failed to alter his fate. Yet he remained tough, rejected aids and protections from others, and stayed true to his faith, "a man is not inborn defeated.""A man may be destroyed but never defeated." These two sentences mark the main idea of the novel, the Old man and the Sea.
Though failure is after another failure, fighting after fighting,
No one's life is smooth. In facing difficulties, and especially facing failures, Never say never and give up. Hemmingway's idea of a "tough guy" has one thing in general: They all had a glorious past; they had prevailed numerous whirlwinds and had countless challengers defeated, but now they no longer possess the former glory. Even though clocks cannot tick backward, life cannot be relived, the old man's indomitable spirit would continue push him forward, and brighten his life forever.
Never stop fighting
In the raging sea, between the teeth of the storm, Santiago was in a broken boat, fighting with the large Marlin and the ferocious sharks after it. This thrilling battle scene with stark contrast, displays such immense strength and beauty, and gives a vivid image of Santiago 's pursuit and struggle.
Hemmingway ultilized sufferings to form the "tough guy" Santiago, a hero. The broken boat was the old man's pursuit and struggle, bumping in waves and currents, moving in hesistations and confusions, searching for a trace of hope. The man, was in the edge of surrender, but his firm hands were still holding a bloody harpoon, his muscles were stronger after pushing himself to extreme, his resolute eyes were still glistening in the middle of lightnings and storms, and his heart was still beating forcefully after devastations and desperations. Through his fighting with dangers, struggling between death, and racing against time, Santiago was given a soul, a fleshy body. Hemimingway, used this story to tell his own life, his own adventure and his own legend.
