Old Summer Palace was first established in Qing dynasty, it was 5 times as big as the Imperial Palace(故宫). It was well known for its precious jewelleries and scarce beautiful gardens. The palace was designed and planned based on both Chinese and Western style. It was used as a place for the emperor to handle affairs.
In the year of 1860, while China was having a war fight against British and French Army, the raging fire in the palace spread all over for 3 days, more than one million of treasures were stolen. During this fire, the Old Summer Palace was having a devastating destruction.
In 1900, Old Summer Palace was destroyed completely by Eight-Power Allied Forces, nothing escaped from this tragedy, the Allied Forces threw the whole palace into chaos.
