San Francisco bid to ban plastic bags
San Francisco is expected to ban big supermarkets and other shops from giving customers plastic bags in order to clean up the city. If the proposal by local officials goes ahead, all but small, local shops that do more than $2 million in sales a year would be forced to offer recyclable bags that can be turned into compost instead.
It goes further than many others plans to deal with the ever-growing plastic bag problem, such as Ireland's introduction of a compulsory charge every time a supermarket hands them over. Jared Blumenfeld from the Department of Environment said. "The plastic bags end up as a litter problem and the city has to spend tens of millions of dollars cleaning up that litter problem. They get into the ocean and they are taken by sea animals."
But Peter Larkin from the ban and said it could possibly cause more harm to the environment. he said, "If you're going to put your toe in the water, why not jump in all the way? Just get it over with and ban plastic altogether. When you put a compostable bag, let's say, in a bin to be recycled, those compostable bags pollute the waste stream making all of the bags unrecyclabe."
The law would come into effect in six months if approved by the San Francisco Board of Leaders.
