According to dictionaries, this phrase means "be aware of ,realize" or "be sensitive to". If "alive" means "living" , "lively" or "lifelike", just as you explained ,the whole sentence may thus get more comprehensible.

至于这个句子，如果不是名家名言，则就一“人工考题句”，也没有必要去分析、理解。题句的意思大概就是作者想尽可能地将这些动物描写得生动些。该作者亲眼看到了这些动物，They are alive to him. 但写成书之后，我们看到的是文字，不是Vedio, 所以这些动物to us, 是不alive的。但好的作家，能将它们描写得栩栩如生，对读者而言(to others) 就好象是alive一样。
