WealllikedoldMaggie.Asmostladsdo,weenjoyedteasing(取笑)her.ButoldMaggiewasalwayssogood-...
We all liked old Maggie. As most lads do, we enjoyed teasing(取笑)her. But old Maggie was always so good-natured (本性善良的) and never really took offence (got angry). Directly the bell went, the ten of us would run the whole of the three hundred yards down the road from our factory to Sam’s café, where old Maggie worked as the only waitress.
We always called her old Maggie although she was not old really, about 47 or 48 years old and no more, but she had had a hard life which had knocked the youth and good looks out of her. She was a little woman with black hair and bright eyes. Make no mistake, her hard life had not knocked the spirit (精神)out of her. She was a wonderful worker, too. Sam definitely (肯定地)did a smart thing when he took on (雇佣) Maggie, and he knew it. All he did was to stand behind the counter taking money.
We all knew about old Maggie’s hard because she was so fond of (喜欢) talking about it. She was married when she was sixteen and she has six children. Her husband died at the time when she was carrying her last child, and she got the job at Sam’s after she had her baby.
