我在其他地方看到两种解释：
一、as 表示“正如。。”的意思，which没有这个意思。

二、本句中的先行词是整个句子。于是原句应该是：
As I had expected, the size of the audience was well over ..thousand.
如果要用which 引导的话，应该是：
The size of the audience was well over ...thousand, which I had expected.

which引导非限制性定语从句的时候，位置可以在句中或者句末，但不能在开头对吗？但是这个句子中which放句中，意思就不太对了。而从表面看来就是解释不出“正如”的意思。
那么是否可以理解成这样一条规律：which引导非限制性定语从句时，若先行词是一个词或词组，那么which的位置可以在句中或句末；若先行词是一个完整的句子，那么which的位置只可以在句末？相反，as的位置则可以任意。
