一、.The peasant and the apple-tree
A Peasant had an Apple-tree growing in his garden, which bore no fruit, but merely served to provide a shelter from the heat for the sparrows and grasshoppers which sat and chirped in its branches. Disappointed at its barrenness he determined to cut it sparrows and the grasshoppers saw what he was about to do, they begged him to spare it, and said to him, “If you destroy the tree we shall have to seek shelter elsewhere, and you will no longer have our merry chirping to enliven your work in the garden.” He ,however, refused to listen to them, and set to work with a will to inside and contained a swarm of bees and a large store of honey. Delighted with his find he threw down his axe, saying, “The old tree is worth keeping after all.”
1. Why did the peasant want to cut the apple-tree?

二、The chopsticks

Mrs Wen had two children, Janmes and William. The boys were always fighting, both at home and at school.

One day, they fought again at school. Their teacher called Mrs Wen and told her about the fighting.

“Oh, I have had enough!” said Mrs Wen after she put down the phone. “Why can’t they help each other and stop fighting?”

When the boys came home that day, Mrs Wen took some chopsticks from the kitchen.

“Try and break these,” she told them. Neither of them could break the chopsticks. Then she gave them one chopstick each.

“Now try and break it, ”she said, They both broke the chopstick easily.

“You see,” said Mrs Wen, “we are like the chopsticks; We are only strong when we help each other. ”

After that, they never fought again.

1.Were Mrs Wen's two children friendly to each other ?

三、International Friendship Day
Every year on the first Sunday of August, people celebrate International Friendship Day. They give each other bracelets to celebrate their friendship on that day.

Friends are very important to our lives. They can encourage us to do better at things. For example, it is easier to study for exams with a friend. We can also become better at sport when we practice with a friend.

When we are friends to others, we must learn to listen to them and help them with their problems. This teaches us be patient, and makes us better people.

Friends support us when we have difficulties or when we are ill. We do not have to face things alone when we have a friend.
