“Wanted: Violin. Can’t pay much, Call…”
That advertisement made me remember my childhood. I, too, had wanted a violin, but we didn’t have the money. Even though life was hard, I couldn’t wait any longer to ask. “Daddy, may I have a violin of my own?” Daddy’s face looked sad. But a few weeks later, Daddy went home, with a case in his hand, saying, “Mary, I found this secondhand violin for seven dollars.”
When I carried my violin to school for my first lesson no one could know how excited I was. I practiced, joined the school orchestra(管弦乐队), gave performances. Several years seemed to run more quickly then and I found myself in the first violin chair. More years passed, and my violin made every move with me, until one day, I carefully put it away.
Now here I was reading the newspaper advertisement. I took the violin out of my closet(储藏室). Then I dialed the number in the newspaper.
Later in the day, a man in his thirties came. “I’ve been expecting someone would answer my advertisement. My daughter wants a violin so badly,” he said, examining my violin. “How much are you asking?”
Any music store would offer me a high price. But now I heard my voice answer, “Seven dollars.” “Are you sure?” he asked, causing me to think so much of Daddy. “Seven dollars,” I repeated and then added, “I hope your little girl will enjoy it as I did.”
I smiled, but I found tears running down.
